Ooze unveils wind-operated art project for Folkestone Triennial

Dutch practice Ooze is to unveil a wind turbine-operated installation at the Foord Road Viaduct in Folkestone as part of the city’s arts triennial
Wind Lift consists of a functioning lift powered by a wind turbine which will take eight visitors at a time to a height of 25m towards the top of the Foord Road Viaduct where they will be able to take in views of the town and the seafront.
The project was designed by Sylvain Hartenberg and Eva Pfannes, co-directors of Ooze Architects, and Slovenian artist Marjetica Potrč, who have collaborated on projects since 2008.
Sylvain Hartenberg said: ‘The Wind Lift only uses energy harvested from wind passing through the viaduct and creates a closed loop of harvest and use. When enough wind energy is collected, the lift can ascend. But if too little energy has been harvested, the lift will not operate, so the number of rides depends entirely on the strength and volume of the wind in the viaduct.’
